Introduction to Drones

This is a Two day course. Classes will meet over a weekend from 6pm- 9pm on Friday and 10 am- 2pm on Saturday.

Are you curious about drones? You hear about themoften today. They come in all shapes and sizes. Do youfind it a bit complicated? Do you need help to learnto safely operate small recreational drones? They arefun and useful devices; however, it can be complicatedat first with regulations and deciding how to choose adrone. This course is for the absolute beginner or the intermediate recreational drone operator. This coursewill cover FAA rules and regulations as well as the aspectsof operating a recreational drone. This two‐day coursewill include both classroom and hands‐on flying! You willbecome familiar with one of the most popular technologies today.

 

Course material:

Open House - Welding & CAD Courses

An Open House will be held at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 4 to 6 p.m. to highlight CAD courses and Welding.  Learn more about the offerings at Southside Virginia Community College Personnel will be present to discuss the classes as well as current and future opportunities.  Students may qualify for financial aid for these courses.

SVCC offers a Career Studies Certificate in these two programs.  Both are designed to give the student the skills and knowledge needed to attain entry-level work at American Buildings Company (ABC) or similar manufacturing industries in the area.  Representatives from ABC and will be present also.

The non ‐credit seminar is offered at a reduced rate and is open to anyone interested in developing skills in securing government and private foundation grants. Besides grant seeking advice and proposal writing techniques and skills, the workshop will teach you the tough questions to ask that will help you to create programs that get funded, stay funded, and are aligned with your mission. The course is suitable for both novice and experienced grant seekers. It covers strategies for finding grant opportunities, how to get your proposal past the first read, how to research foundations and corporations that engage in philanthropy, and many other topics often never considered by individuals seeking grants. The seminar will be led by Dr. Charles Stallard, President of the Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens, Inc.Dr. Stallard is a former Assistant Dean of Research at Old Dominion University and an accomplished author who has published more than 150 research journal articles as well as three books. Lunch will be on your own each day.

Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) Prep Course

The WorkKeys National CRC is a portable credential designed to provide evidence that an individual is ready for work with respect to fundamental standards or workforce literacy. Endorsed by the Governor of Virginia, the NCRC can distinguish and certify your skills in the job market and proves to an employer that you possess what it takes to be successful. The NCRC is a clear standard tool to assess the competencies of an individual in the workplace skill areas of: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information. Pre-registration is required.

This year the concert features a string quartet, sponsored by a grant through the SVCC Foundation Educational Excellence Awards Program.
