Dr. John J. Cavan, SVCC President, was recently recognized at a reception in his honor held at the Ripberger Library in Kenbridge. Dr. Cavan's mandala art was on display for a month at the library. Dr. Cavan's art began as 'just doodles" and evolved into more concentrated, colorful painitngs.
His work celebrates colleges and universities, special holidays and events. All of the art is displayed on the John H. Daniel and Christanna Campuses of SVCC.
Recently Associate Degree Nursing Students from the Christanna and Daniel Campuses of Southside Virginia Community College and from the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston received their nursing pins. These graduates are now eligible to take the nursing exam to become registered nurses.
Southside Virginia Community College hosted it's GED Graduation on May 20th at the Christanna Campus in Alberta. SVCC helped 150 students to obtain their GED throughout the school year. The graduates in attendance were from Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward counties.
Andrew Delvecchio, Michael Delvecchio and Antonio Fuentes were recognized as GAMA Scholarship Recipients, meaning they scored 2700 or higher on the GED Test (which is equivalent to graduating from High School with honors).

As many of you know, I grew up in the wonderful little community of Fancy Gap, Virginia. For those of you not familiar with my “hometown”, it is nestled atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in Rural Carroll County not too far from the North Carolina border.
A proud tent full of graduates joined Commencement speaker Dr. Terry Whisnant in chanting “We are Southside, We are Southside,” to mark the end of his speech and the beginning of their futures on May 11, 2013 at Southside Virginia Community College, Christanna Campus.
The Southside Virginia Community College instructors for the High Performance Technology Dual Enrollment Program and Advanced Manufacturing Dual Enrollment Program are very proud of one of their star students—Donmanique Hardy. Donmanique received a full scholarship in Track and Field to attend Hampton University in the fall.

The new Learning Resource Student Service building will be located to the north of the main instructional building on the Daniel campus. It is being built by Kenbridge Construction Inc with a projected completion date of May 2014.
Some things improve with age, but websites are not one of those things. As painful as change can be, it was time for a redesign of our website so we could better meet the needs of our students, faculty, staff, and community. Please take a few minutes to look around and familiarize yourself with the new organization and navigation. It will take time to get used to it, but in the end we feel that this was a much needed step forward.
On the evening of May 17th, all SVCC student Gmail accounts will be changed to include access to additional Google Applications. The entire Virginia Community College System utilizes Google for student e-mail, and through this student Gmail account, you have had access to Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Gmail, Sites, and Talk. We are excited to announce that the following list of Google services or apps will be made available (linked) to your student account very soon.
As a professor at Southside Virginia Community College, Dr. W. Terry Whisnant strives to “stimulate student interest, promote critical thinking and foster personal development.” With more than 30 years’ experience, Dr. Whisnant is currently professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences and his classes fill each semester due to his reputation as an entertaining and informative teacher.

Southside Virginia Community College Christanna Campus held its first Student Health 101 Picnic & Health Fair on April 25th. The day’s events included many healthy menu items, door prizes, health screenings such as glucose screenings, BMI and blood pressure checks as well as opportunities to engage in conversation with health vendors from the community.
Southside Virginia Community College Nursing faculty have recently contributed to the Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual published by Lippincott, Wilkins and Williams. Leigh Moore (Left) and Felicia Omick (Right) are listed as contributors and each wrote four different research articles applying evidenced-based practice and introduced each of the 8 chapters in the book. Omick wrote in the categories of Adult Health, Geriatric Health, Community-Based Health and Wellness. Moore wrote on Adolescent Health, Child Health, Maternal-Neon
Southside Virginia Community College is offering a Human Services Seminar on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 in the John J. Cavan Workforce Center at Alberta. Check-in is 8:30 a.m. with the classes beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. The event is free, lunch is provided but pre-registration is required.

The Southern Virginia STEM-H Summit Education for Innovation was held April 12, 2013 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Dr. Christy Lowery-Carter, Associate Professor of Mathematics, and Jorge Gavillan, Instructor of Mathematics at Southside Virginia Community College co-presented two breakout 
sessions titled “Stop the Walking Dead”.
The Wellness club went to Richmond for a day of exploring the world of Organic Foods! On Monday April 15th the group went to three of the premier supermarkets that specialize in organic and natural products. Ellwood Thompson’s Local Organic Market in Richmond, Whole Foods Market in Short Pump and Trader Joe’s also in Short Pump. At each location the group sampled foods that were made using locally sourced organic farm products.
We're rolling out the "red carpet" for the premiere of the new SVCC Video at 10 A.M. on Friday, April 12th in the John H. Cavan Workforce Development Center on the Christanna Campus.
Southside Virginia Community College Christanna students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on April 1, 2013. Membership is extended by invitation and recognizes academic success with students having to have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above.
