We Have A New Look!

Some things improve with age, but websites are not one of those things.  As painful as change can be, it was time for a redesign of our website so we could better meet the needs of our students, faculty, staff, and community.  Please take a few minutes to look around and familiarize yourself with the new organization and navigation.  It will take time to get used to it, but in the end we feel that this was a much needed step forward. 

Changes to Student Gmail - New Google Applications for Students

On the evening of May 17th, all SVCC student Gmail accounts will be changed to include access to additional Google Applications.  The entire Virginia Community College System utilizes Google for student e-mail, and through this student Gmail account, you have had access to Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Gmail, Sites, and Talk. We are excited to announce that the following list of Google services or apps will be made available (linked) to your student account very soon.

SVCC Commencement Set for May 11, Dr. Terry Whisnant Named Speaker

As a professor at Southside Virginia Community College, Dr. W. Terry Whisnant strives to “stimulate student interest, promote critical thinking and foster personal development.” With more than 30 years’ experience, Dr. Whisnant is currently professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences and his classes fill each semester due to his reputation as an entertaining and informative teacher.

Nursing Faculty Contribute to the Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual

Southside Virginia Community College Nursing faculty have recently contributed to the Nursing  Diagnosis Reference Manual published by Lippincott, Wilkins and Williams.  Leigh Moore (Left) and Felicia Omick (Right) are  listed as contributors and  each wrote four different research articles applying evidenced-based practice and  introduced each of the 8 chapters in the book.   Omick wrote in the categories of  Adult Health, Geriatric Health, Community-Based Health and Wellness.  Moore wrote  on Adolescent Health, Child Health, Maternal-Neon

Wellness is Happening

The Wellness club went to Richmond for a day of exploring the world of Organic Foods! On Monday April 15th the group went to three of the premier supermarkets that specialize in organic and natural products. Ellwood Thompson’s Local Organic Market in Richmond, Whole Foods Market in Short Pump and Trader Joe’s also in Short Pump.  At each location the group sampled foods that were made using locally sourced organic farm products.

Phi Theta Kappa Inductions

Southside Virginia Community College  Christanna students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on April 1, 2013. Membership is extended by invitation and recognizes academic success with students having to have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above.

"Leadership Southside" Welcomed Daphne Maxwell-Reid

The first Leadership Southside Lecture Series seminar was an enormous success. Our featured speaker was Mrs. Daphne Maxwell-Reid, who is best known for her role as “Aunt Viv” on the popular 90’s sit-com, “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” She currently is on the board at Virginia State University and is a founder and principle of New Millennium Studios, which is located in Petersburg, Virginia.

Agribusiness Spring Speaker Series

Southside Virginia Community College’s Agribusiness program is pleased to bring a number of informative and educational speakers to campus.  All presentations are free and open to the public. Presentations will take place on Monday evenings from 6-7:15PM as a part of the Agricultural Policy course and can be attended on the Daniel campus in Keysville (in the Distance Learning classroom), the Christanna campus in Alberta (in Room C-2), or at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston (Room AT1). 

Mobile Mammography Program

Rural women are 20 percent less likely than urban women to get regular mammograms. Have you or the women in your life had an annual mammogram yet? If not, then you do not need to take a day off and drive to the doctor's office. You can get your mammogram done right here on campus!

SVCC Repeats as VCCS State Champions

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team repeated as Virginia Community College System state champions after topping Tidewater CC 127-111 in the title game on Sunday afternoon at Brunswick High School. The victory improved SVCC to 17-6 on the season. The championship was the fourth for the school in the past five seasons and sixth overall.

The local team won 14 of their final 15 games after a 3-5 start to the season.

Title III Program

KEYSVILLE, VA – Being recognized for meeting the challenge of the Title III Program at Southside Virginia Community College recently were the administrators, staff, advisory board members and professional tutors. Each person received an award during the
celebration at the Estes Center in Chase City.
