Alumni Spotlight - Louise Puryear

Louise Puryear

From Chase City, Virginia, Louise Puryear is a Mecklenburg Academy graduate. After high school graduation, she chose Southside Virginia Community College as an affordable option to explore where her interests lay. Louise ultimately earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in secretarial science from SVCC.

After graduating from SVCC, Louise transferred to Longwood University, majoring in business education. Since Longwood, she has been teaching in Mecklenburg County for the past 39 years, currently as a career and technical education teacher. As retirement approaches, she plans to remain active in the school system or community as a volunteer.

Reflecting on her SVCC experience, Louise says, "I thoroughly enjoyed my years at SVCC. I had wonderful instructors who were dedicated and very nurturing in helping me decide on a career. I owe it all to Mrs. Polly Beard for encouraging me to further my education to become a teacher.  My classes were small and therefore the instructors were able to provide individualized assistance when needed. I would encourage anyone who is undecided about furthering their education to consider enrolling at SVCC and begin taking some classes to see where they might lead you."
