Alumni Spotlight - Maria Perry

Maria Perry

Maria Perry grew up in Lawrenceville, VA and enrolled at Southside Virginia Community College after graduating from Brunswick Senior High School. She earned an Associate of Arts and Sciences in General Studies/Human Services from SVCC.

Maria transferred to the Old Dominion University Distance Learning Center on SVCC's campus, where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services. She is now employed by Mecklenburg County Public Schools as an Exceptional Programs Teacher.

Reflecting on her time at SVCC, Maria says, "When I started at SVCC, I also accepted a work-study position in the admissions office and later moved to a part-time position. It was my first job. I never imagined the growth that would come from working and studying at a community college.

She continued with advice for current and future students. "Get to know some of your peers. It's a good place to build on your skills, meet new people, learn a trade or get a start on your ultimate goals. I have always loved SVCC's slogan 'Success Starts Here!' "

Maria has been a member of the Tower of Prayer Church in South Hill since 2009 and says, "I have many things that I am proud of and I would feel guilty if I didn't mention the spiritual support that I have with my church family."
