Melanie Scruggs grew up in Chase City, Virginia and graduated from Bluestone High School. After high school, she attended Longwood University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
When Melanie later decided she wanted to pursue a nursing career, she appreciated the smaller class sizes at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC). She joyfully says, “My (SVCC) professors all knew my name, my strengths, and my weaknesses. The personal involvement and the desire for everyone to achieve success is what convinced me to choose SVCC.” Melanie graduated with an associate's degree in nursing and earned her Registered Nurse certification.
Currently, Melanie is employed by Charlotte County Public Schools as a full-time nurse at Phenix Elementary School. She also works as a PRN, which is an “as needed” registered nurse, in Centra Southside Community Hospital’s emergency room.
Melanie plans to continue working as a school nurse, as well as furthering her education to complete a master’s degree in nursing administration.
When asked to give advice to future SVCC students, Melanie says, “Do not give up! Life can be hard, but always know your education is something you will always have. The knowledge you gain will be with you for the rest of your life!”
