A Brodnax native, Melody chose Southside Virginia Community College because it was close to home and allowed her to use her G.I. Bill. “I attended SVCC right after high school for three semesters and then decided to serve my country. After four years in the Navy, I had an interest in criminal justice. I went to school at SVCC while working full time and pregnant, then continued while raising two babies!” says Melody.
Melody credits SVCC with helping her in her career as a Jail Officer at Meherrin Regional Jail. With her military training and degree, her career goals include advancement to sergeant, then lieutenant.
She advises students, “Don’t feel like you are stuck in a career for life if you are not truly happy! In my late 40s, I decided it’s time to work in a career I’ve always loved! I now enjoy going into work each day!”
