Raised in Nottoway County’s Blackstone in a family of ten children, Zelda D. Tucker-Dugger found her calling in the educational field. After graduating from Southside Virginia Community College with an Associate in Applied Science in business management, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in business administration and Master of Education in guidance degrees from Virginia State University.
Tucker-Dugger was then employed at St. Paul’s College as a counselor in the Student Support Services Program in 1984. Then, In January 1985, she began working at Virginia State University as a counselor with the Educational Talent Search Program, a program funded through the Department of Education. In this capacity, she traveled to several county schools, encouraging students in grades 9-12 to continue their education after high school or assisting them with making vocational/career choices. After several rewarding years in this position, she was named Director of the program in 1994. Presently, she is the Work Study Coordinator at VSU.
The proud parent of an adult college graduate, Zelda is very active in her church and sorority and is a former member of the Petersburg School Board. She currently represents the city of Petersburg on the John Tyler Community College Board.
She is very grateful for the education, experiences and people she has met throughout her career and enjoys helping people, especially encouraging young adults. “I believe that the educational opportunities provided by community colleges can assist any student who wants to continue his/her education at an affordable cost. The vocational opportunities as well the opportunity to continue at a four-year institution can be rewarding to any student who is not sure of his/her choices to enhance their future career endeavors.”
