SVCC Earns Comeback Win

Trailing by 14 midway through the second half, the Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team went on a 16-1 run to regain the lead and then held on down the stretch for an 84-77 win over Vance Granville CC last Wednesday night at Southern Vance High School.

The win improved SVCC, the reigning VCCS state champions, to 1-1 on the season while the Vanguards fell to 0-2.

“Our kids did a great job of keeping their composure and keeping their heads in the game,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith, who notched his 100th win as coach of the team.

Derrick Sprattley (Halifax HS) gave the Force their first lead of the second half with a tip-in for a 62-61 advantage with 9:26 left to play.

Antron Fowlkes (Prince Edward HS) who was sidelined with foul trouble for most of the game hit three straight buckets for SVCC to cut the Vanguards lead to 74-72 with 4:06 left to play.

SVCC hit 10 of 13 from the charity stripe over the last few minutes to seal the win.
Javon Lockett led SVCC with 17 points while Demond Faulcon and Fowlkes added 14 points apiece and Rahsaan Stith added 12.

SVCC will return to the court on Saturday, November 28 when they entertain the Vanguards for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
