Students from Bluestone High School recently visited the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center (LCAKC) of Southside Virginia Community College in South Hill.
Bluestone students toured the facilities and learned about the many programs offered through dual enrollment in Career and Technical Education. These courses are available to many school districts in the southern Virginia region.
The Lake Country Center provides numerous opportunities for students of all ages, including summer camps, non-credit courses, licensing courses, and other classes toward certification or degree.
The center allows area students to explore careers and requirements for fire science technology, emergency medical technology, high performance technology, advanced manufacturing, HVAC and welding.
High school students have access to college resources including career readiness and preparation, research, tutoring, and much more.
The Career and Technical classes include hands-on training for real work scenarios. Many dual enrollment students have experienced success in national competitions, and have graduated from the program into fulfilling careers.
Though the requirements for each program are different, they integrate necessary certifications with projects, equipment use, clinical hours, and a host of other activities. It allows students a chance to truly understand what it is like in the real world as they begin to make decisions about their next steps.
The faculty in the Career and Technical programs work in small groups or one-on-one with students to help them achieve their goals. Local government agencies, businesses, and organizations also work in partnership with parts of this program.
