Southside Virginia Community College recently recognized employees who had served the Commonwealth of Virginia. Service awards are given at each five year mark to the faithful employee of a state agency.
Angela Marie Carter, author of Memory Chose A Woman’s Body, will speak at a Meet the Author event at the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. She will be speaker at a 12 noon event in the John J. Cavan Workforce Development Center and again at 6 p.m. in the Howell Library. The public and students are encouraged to attend.
The BB&T Bank traveling bus and financial center visited the campus of Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta this week. Representatives were available to meet with students to answer financial questions. Since graduating from the SVCC Truck Driver Training School last year, Mary Bagwell has accumulated 250,000 miles as one part of Team Bagwell driving for Abilene Motor Express of Richmond, Virginia. Having ridden with her truck driving husband, Kris, for many years and been encouraged to drive also, she signed up for the SVCC School located at Pickett Park.
Southside Virginia Community College recently had a ribbon cutting for its new Learning Resources & Student Services Building on the John H. Daniel Campus in Keysville, VA.
Southside Virginia Community College student Monica McMillan has been selected to attend the 2014 Student Veterans of America Leadership Institute in Bentonville, Arkansas. She was one of 125 student veteran leaders from across the country selected to attend this program.
The 2014 SVA Leadership Institute will be held at the Wal-Mart Headquarters in Bentonville, AR. This all-expenses paid, multi-day training seminar will bring a select number of up-and-coming chapter leaders together for a unique professional development opportunity.
Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton visited the John H. Daniel Campus on July 29th to tour the new Student Services & Learning Resource Center. Secretary Holton also had a round table discussion with college administrators and staff.

The Student Veterans of America Organization at Southside Virginia Community College attended the "Student Voices Session" with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on July 22nd at the Department of Education headquarters. The topic of the meeting was to focus on “The 8 Keys to Veterans' Success”, which is a voluntary initiative through the Departments of Education and Veterans Affairs.
Fewer than 10 schools nationwide were invited to participate in this event. The SVCC group had the opportunity and privilege to represent community college students across our nation.
Southside Virginia Community College has again been named a "Great College to Work For" by the Chronicle of Higher Education. The school also received "Honor Roll" recognition. Of the institutions taking part, only 92 were recognized as a "Great College to Work For" and only 42 achieved Honor Roll status.
The second annual summer STEM Academy was held June 23-26 on the John H. Daniel Campus of Southside Virginia Community College. Nearly 70 students from Halifax County Middle School and Halifax County High School attended the four-day academy.
The new Learning Resources and Student Services building located to the north of the main instructional building on the John H. Daniel Campus is open! Daniel Campus students now need to go to that building for advising and registration.

Southside Virginia Community College instructors, Clint Johnson and Ronnie Cole, received the 2013-2014 Virginia Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Award for CTE Postsecondary Programs. Johnson and Cole received the award for their work on the "Integrated Robohand Project".

Danville Community College’s Alumni Association honored Dr. Percy Richardson, faculty member at Southside Virginia Community College as a 2014 Outstanding DCC Alumni in banquet ceremonies April 11 in Oliver Hall on the DCC campus. Honorees represent Danville Community College and its two predecessor institutions, Danville Technical Institute and Virginia Polytechnic Institute—Danville.
The next president of Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is Dr. Alfred A. Roberts, of Emporia, Virginia. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, said Roberts will assume his new post on or about Aug. 1, 2014, replacing retiring president Dr. John Cavan. “I’ve known Al for a long time and I have observed his leadership at SVCC for many years,” DuBois said in making the appointment. “I’m confident he will do a terrific job in taking the college to the next level.”
