Dr. Alfred A. Roberts Named Southside Virginia Community College’s Next President

The next president of Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is Dr. Alfred A. Roberts, of Emporia, Virginia. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, said Roberts will assume his new post on or about Aug. 1, 2014, replacing retiring president Dr. John Cavan. “I’ve known Al for a long time and I have observed his leadership at SVCC for many years,” DuBois said in making the appointment. “I’m confident he will do a terrific job in taking the college to the next level.”

Halifax Regional Health System Honored with 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

Halifax Regional Health System of South Boston, Virginia, has earned the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy.  The system was nominated for the award by Southside Virginia Community College.  The award was given at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia recently.

According to CEO, Chris Lumsden, “Higher Education and the community college system specifically give people opportunities and hope.  It is the foundation for our higher education system here in this region and supplied a pool of highly qualified employees for our business.” 

Winners in the Science and Humanities Symposium

Students from Southside Virginia Community College Governor's School competed in the 2014 Virginia Junior Science and Humanities Symposium that was held at James Madison University in late March. The recipients of the award for the Outstanding Oral Team Presentation in the Humanities were (from L to R) Jasmine Harrison, Francesca Whitfield and Raia Walker.  The students competed against seventy four oral presenters of scientific and humanities research.

Second Annual Student Health 101 Picnic and Health Fair

The second annual Student Health 101 Picnic & Health Fair was held on the Christanna Campus on Thursday, April 24th. This event was a true party with a purpose as the college community had fun learning more about healthy living. Attendees partook in a healthy meal, door prizes, informative conversations about their personal health, as well as took advantage of free health screenings like BMI, HIV testing, glucose, and blood pressure checks.

Color Me Powerful

The Southside Virginia Community College Workforce Department welcomed 60 local administrative assistants and support personnel for a workshop on the John H. Daniel Campus entitled "Color Me Powerful: Showcasing the Professional Me" on April 24 in celebration of Administrative Assistants week.

Criminal Justice students tour Washington

Dr. James Taylor, Associate Professor and Program Head of the SVCC  Criminal Justice Program, Christanna Campus,  recently  led an educational field trip to the nation's capital. 

The Constitutional Law class and other ADJ Classes and members of the Criminal Justice Club visited  the United States Supreme Court and the Library of Congress on April 1st and the U. S. Capital on April 2nd.   Oral arguments were being held during the time of the tour at the Supreme Court.

New Members of Phi Theta Kappa

The Phi Theta Kappa Chapter of the Christanna Campus in Alberta, Southside Virginia Community College held an induction ceremony recently to welcome new members.  Membership is extended by invitation and to be considered a student must be enrolled in a two-year college, have accumulated 12 semester credit hours, have achieved a cumulative gpa of not less than 3.5 and exhibit good citizenship.

Southside Virginia Community College in partnership with the South Central Workforce Investment Board is hosting "Career Day 2014" being held at the John H. Daniel Campus in Keysville on Wednesday, April 23rd from 2-4pm.
