Here are the recent graduates of the Southside Virginia Community College Truck Driver Training School in South Boston.
The Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan group that informs the public about issues, attitudes, and trends that shape the country and the world, examined the situation facing workers in the United States. The report summarizing their findings was titled “The State of American Jobs: How the shifting economic landscape is reshaping work and society and affecting the way people think about the skills and training they need to get ahead” (October 2016).
Megan Hathaway grew up in Charlotte County, Virginia and graduated from Randolph Henry High School. She earned a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate from Southside Virginia Community College and became a CNA in 2009, the same year she graduated high school. She later returned to SVCC and completed her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing in 2016.
The new state-of-the-art training laboratory enhancing workforce readiness for jobs in Information Technology was officially opened August 30, 2017 with a ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the South Hill Chamber of Commerce, Located at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill, the new Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) lab simulates the work environment of large data centers.

Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced that Virginia has achieved the goal he set in his Executive Order 23 – Establishing the New Virginia Economy Workforce Initiative, which called for the annual production of 50,000 workforce credentials aligned with high-paying jobs in science, technology, engineering, math, and healthcare (STEM-H). The 50,361 STEM-H credentials awarded during fiscal year 2017 represent a 36-percent increase compared to fiscal year 2014 when the goal of 50,000 credentials per year was set. These credentials include: associate degrees, certificate programs, apprenticeships, certifications, licenses, and industry credentials.
Patriot's Day was established to honor the lives lost during the September 11th terror attack and to honor the first responders. Please stop by Student Services to sign a card of appreciation for our first responders. Cards will be sent to our local first responders and to those helping with disaster relief. 200 hundred cards have been purchased and will be available for signatures and words of encouragement until September 25th.
The office of Student Activities at Southside Virginia Community College has collaborated with several non-profit organization who will be taking supplies to Texas for Hurricane Harvey Relief and to Florida for Hurricane Irma relief. The student services areas on the Christanna and Keysville campuses will be drop off locations from now until September 25, 2017.
From South Hill, Virginia, Lindsey Smiley Dawson enrolled at Southside Virginia Community College after graduating from Park View High School in 2002. She earned an Associate of Applied Science in Administration of Justice, as well a Career Studies Certificate in Forensics Science from SVCC. While an SVCC student, she became a member of Phi Theta Kappa and held the position of Vice President of Leadership.
Gregory Reed grew up in Charlotte Court House, Virginia and graduated from Randolph-Henry High School. He earned his Associate of Applied Science in Information Systems Technology from Southside Virginia Community College and completed the IT Academy at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in partnership with SVCC in South Boston.
With all the news about hurricane Harvey and the fears surrounding hurricane Irma, this may be a good time to remind you about the free “SVCC Alert” system. School officials can advise you if classes have been cancelled or delayed because of weather or any other emergency. You can get these alerts on your smart phone, by email or even on your home phone.
