The second annual Student Health 101 Picnic & Health Fair was held on the Christanna Campus on Thursday, April 24th. This event was a true party with a purpose as the college community had fun learning more about healthy living. Attendees partook in a healthy meal, door prizes, informative conversations about their personal health, as well as took advantage of free health screenings like BMI, HIV testing, glucose, and blood pressure checks.
Our knowledgeable community health vendors included: Brunswick County Health Department of Lawrenceville, VA; Community Memorial Healthcenter (CMH) of South Hill, Virginia; Fleshood Chiropractic of South Hill, VA; Freedom Life Fitness of South Hill, Virginia; Madeline’s House of Blackstone, VA; Minority Health Consortium of Richmond, VA; and Relay for Life of Lawrenceville, VA.
SVCC student clubs and organizations also took a part by sponsoring our Water Station (Student Veterans of America), offering blood pressure and glucose screenings (RN Nursing Club), and dancing for a cause (Empowered Women’s Organizations). The Campus Activities Team (CAT) assisted by registering approximately 160 attendees, serving our nutritious meal, and manning the very popular Tie Dye Station.
The students’ day in the sun was capped off with several friendly competitions that kept them up and moving such as the egg-toss, tug of war, three-legged race, hula-hoop contest and starring in a Happy video. All door prize winners received fitness related gifts that will help them remain active throughout the summer months
