After graduating from Central of Lunenburg High School, Bernard Robinson enrolled at Southside Virginia Community College on the Alberta Campus in the fall of 1989. His program of Data Processing transitioned to Information System Technology (IST) during the two academic years he attended the College and he earned his associate degree in IST. Prior to his graduation, one of his instructors, Bill Wilson, introduced him to a human resource representative at Huyck Felt Company in Farmville. He was hired nearly on the spot.
A few years later, Bernard returned to SVCC to earn another associate degree which was in Electronics Technology. While earning this degree, he worked for the College as an adjunct faculty teaching Introduction to Microcomputer Software and as a full-time computer technician. This provided an ideal learning experience for Bernard, combining the theory in the classroom and the practical focus of the work.
His two associate degrees and valuable work experience, as well as the need for computer-savvy employees, dovetailed nicely for Bernard and he was hired by Mecklenburg County Public Schools to work in the technology department, where he has been for eighteen years. While it is probably one of the most hectic areas in any work place, Bernard seems to thrive on the challenges of the computer world. It has been so much of his life that he started his own consulting company, Lake Country Computer Services.
Bernard states that he selected SVCC because it was local, small and affordable and offered the courses in which he had a high level of interest.
When Bernard isn’t loading software, repairing hardware and resolving computer glitches, he and his wife, Gretchen, are raising their three beautiful children in South Hill.
