The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team rebounded from a loss at Thomas Nelson CC in Hampton on Saturday to top Johnston County CC (NC) 74-72 at home on Sunday afternoon. The victory improved the local team to 5-7 on the season. With the game tied at 72, SVCC guard Rick Sullivan drove into the paint and hit a runner at the buzzer for the game-winner.
Sullivan scored all 14 of his points in the second half and added five assists and four rebounds. The local team fell behind early in the game but fought back as a bucket by Marctavious Holmes and a big dunk by DeAndre Miles cut the JCCC lead to 16-12 at the 10:19 mark of the first half. Six straight points by TJ House cut the lead to 24-20 at the 3:33 mark but JCCC took a 34-30 lead to the halftime break.
SVCC tied the score at 44 at the 13:33 mark of the second half on a trey by Sullivan and extended the lead to 63-52 on a trey by House at the 6:44 mark. JCCC rallied back to take a lead but Holmes hit 1 of 2 from the line to knot the score at 70 at the 2:00 mark. SVCC took a 72-70 lead on a free-throw by Holmes with 30 seconds left but JCCC got a bucket with nine seconds left to knot the score before the local team took a timeout and Sullivan scored the game-winner at the buzzer.
Aaron Logan led SVCC with 20 points and 15 rebounds in the game while Holmes scored 16 points and added six rebounds. House added 12 points and five assists while Miles tallied nine points.
