SVCC Earns Weekend Split

Despite a slow start to the season, the young Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team earned a split over the weekend after topping Stillwater Christian 94-74 on Sunday afternoon. The win improved SVCC to 3-6 on the campaign. The local team jumped out to a 16-0 lead behind six points from TJ House and six from Marquise Petty. 

A bucket by Petty and a trey by House extended the lead to 27-15 but Stillwater closed the halftime deficit to 33-32 with a big run late in the first half. SVCC went on an 8-0 run to start the second half to open up a 41-32 lead at the 18:30 mark on a big dunk by Petty. A 3-point play by House and two straight buckets by Aaron Logan gave SVCC a 55-45 lead at the 12:34 mark as the local team pulled away in the final ten minutes to seal the 94-74 win.

Petty led six SVCC players in double figures with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Sullivan scored 15 points and added four rebounds. House finished with 15 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds while Tae Holmes scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds. Khalil Moore finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Logan added 10 points and nine rebounds.

SVCC dropped an 87-83 decision to visiting Bryant & Stratton MIT on Saturday afternoon despite a big second-half comeback. SVCC got off to a quick start against the Bobcats as a big dunk by DeAndre Miles gave the local team an 8-3 lead at the 17:15 mark of the first half. The Bobcats rallied to take a 31-25 lead before House buried a trey to cut the deficit to three at the 7:01 mark. Two buckets by Tyandre Harris late in the half cut the Bobcats lead to 51-46 at the halftime break.

SVCC fell behind by as many as 12 early in the second half but fought back as buckets by Holmes and House cut the lead to 78-74 at the 3:19 mark. Logan hit two treys over the final minute to cut the deficit to three but that was as close as SVCC would get. Logan led SVCC with 23 points and eight rebounds while House scored 20 points and added seven assists and six rebounds and Miles added 16 points and nine rebounds.
