Coming off of a lackluster effort in a blowout loss to Bryant & Stratton MIT on Saturday, the Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team rebounded with a 106-95 victory over King Prep at home on Sunday afternoon. The win improved SVCC to 5-5 on the season. The local team came out hot on Sunday afternoon as Michael Jackson completed a 3-point play and KJ Reagans hit back-to-back treys to give the local team a 15-2 lead at the 16:22 mark of the first half. Naquan Jordan completed a 3-point play and Isaac Edwards hit two free-throws to give SVCC a 28-9 lead at the 9:51 mark.
The local team continued to pour it on as Aaron Logan scored a bucket and Cameron Hughes hit a bucket as SVCC took a 48-30 lead to the halftime break. SVCC got a 3-point play from Ricardo Sullivan early in the second half and Jackson hit a floater for an 85-69 lead at the 6:33 mark. Terell Carden’s trey in the final minute put the bow on the win for the Panthers. Jackson led SVCC with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Sullivan scored 20 points and added 11 assists. Reagans scored 17 points in the victory while Logan added 15 points, 17 rebounds and four steals.
SVCC could not answer the bell after the halftime break on Saturday as Bryant & Stratton MIT pulled away from a 57-52 halftime lead to blast the local team, 114-72. The Panthers got off to a good start in the game as a 3-point play by Sullivan and a bucket by Jackson gave SVCC a 13-8 lead at the 17:25 mark of the first half. SVCC got a trey from Reagans and four straight from Logan to open up a 29-23 lead at the 11:35 mark. A trey by Sullivan knotted the score at 44 at the 3:51 mark of the first half but the Bobcats ended the half on a 13-8 run to take a 57-52 lead to the halftime break.
SVCC came out and cut the lead to 59-57 on two free-throws by Sullivan at the 17:58 mark of the second half but the Bobcats answered with a 21-8 run to open up a double digit lead. SVCC scored only six points over the last 10 minutes as Bryant & Stratton pulled away for the lopsided victory. Sullivan led SVCC with 24 points in the loss while Logan scored 14 and Jackson added nine.
