SVCC Snapshot: Chad Patton

We visit with Chad Patton, Dean of Career and Occupational Technology at Southside Virginia Community College.

How long have you worked at SVCC?

Eighteen years

What other positions have you held at SVCC?

Dean of Instruction, Dean of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, Instructor for the Administration of Justice, and assisted in the Foundation Office writing grants

Name one thing on your bucket list.

To learn a foreign language. I just know enough Spanish to tell someone they are under arrest. I would love to learn more.

 Who was your favorite teacher?

Mr. Wiley Watson taught Constitutional and Criminal Law at Virginia Highlands Community College. He made us stand when we spoke in class and gave the hardest homework and tests of my college career. Extremely challenging! He made me work very hard and achieve more than I thought I was able.

What did you want to do when you grew up?

Since I was 4 or 5 I knew I wanted to be a police officer.

What was your first job?

As a teen, I worked on a tree farm. My first full-time job was serving as a police officer for the Town of Clarksville.

Of what achievement are you most proud?

Creating opportunities for others to learn and acquire more skills. I am always proud of new programs or new labs that I help to create. The CITE lab is a good example.

If you could have lunch with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? What would you eat?

Caleb from the Book of Numbers. He was a courageous person even in his old age. I would imagine we would eat steak, he doesn't seem like he would be a salad person.

What is the best book you ever read?

The Bible
