SVCC Snampshot

We visit with Detra Carr, a Truck Driving Training Instructor at SVCC.

How long have you worked at SVCC?

I started in January 2000.

Name one thing on your bucket list.

I want to see my grandchildren grow up and finish school and college. Also, I want to do more traveling.

Who was your favorite teacher?

One of my favorite teachers was Mrs. Maddie Lee at Sinai Elementary School, 6th grade. She taught math and science. Another favorite was Mr. Frank Lee.  He taught 8th-grade art at Mary Bethune High School.

What did you want to do when you grew up?

I wanted to be a funeral director.

What was your first job?

I lived on a tobacco farm, but I worked at a co-op, picking cucumbers.

Of what achievement are you most proud?

Graduating from Southside Virginia Community College and then being able to come back and be an instructor.

If you could have lunch with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? What would you eat?

I'd eat lunch with former President Obama and wife. I'd like to eat steak and lobster (surf and turf).

What is the best book you ever read?

Pride and Prejudice
