The Southside Virginia Community men’s basketball team earned a big road win, topping the College of Southern Maryland 88-84 on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved SVCC to 2-4 on the season while CSM, a NJCAA Division 2 member, fell to 3-5 on the season.
SVCC has played an aggressive schedule to start the season, playing five road games, including three against teams ranked in the NJCAA national polls.
“This was a good team win for us,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith. “We have been on an extended road trip to start our campaign against some very good teams but it should make us better over the second half of the season.”
CSM jumped out to an early 33-19 lead but SVCC fought back with an 11-4 run over the final 2:29, getting a trey from Tevin Holloway at the buzzer to cut the halftime deficit to 37-30.
SVCC tied the score on three different occasions in the second half and took a 66-65 lead at the 5:52 mark on a bucket by Trevor Williams.
Two free throws by Reggie Dennis and a steal and dunk by Marcus Hoosier gave SVCC a 74-67 lead with 3:50 left to play.
DaShaun Coleman hit four straight free throws over the last 17 seconds to seal the win as SVCC hit 11 of 13 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes.
Holloway and Hoosier led SVCC with 16 points apiece in the victory while Coleman scored 14 and Trevor Williams and Donald Maxwell added 12 points apiece.
