SVCC Upends VUL, 98-91

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team topped Virginia University of Lynchburg 98-91 on Saturday to record its fifth win in the last six games.

The victory, which improved the local club to 6-5 on the season, was the third for SVCC over a four-year college varsity team in program history after the team earned a pair of wins against Mid-Atlantic Christian University last season.

SVCC came out firing on all cylinders to start the contest, jumping out to a 22-4 lead at the 12:16 mark of the first half on a big dunk by Cordaro Boyd.

Mr. HoosierThe Dragons fought back with an 18-5 run to close to 27-22 at the 6:09 mark of the first half but Tevin Holloway hit two treys over a two-minute period and Boyd completed a 3-point play for a 38-26 lead.

A trey by Reggie Dennis at the buzzer gave SVCC a 49-34 halftime lead.

SVCC took a 63-57 lead at the 11:44 mark of the second half on a trey by Marcus Hoosier but VUL responded with a 6-0 run to knot the score at 63.

A bucket by Edmund Maxwell and a short jumper by Dashaun Coleman gave SVCC a 71-65 lead with 7:34 left to play.

Maxwell completed a 3-point play and hit a deep trey with 1:05 left to help seal the victory.

Hoosier and Maxwell paced SVCC with 20 points apiece while Boyd scored 15 and Coleman added 11.

Boyd pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded five blocks in the game while Hoosier added eight assists, seven rebounds and five blocks.

E. Maxwell finished with seven assists and five rebounds while Coleman added six boards.

Jack Knight paced VUL with 25 points while Hakeem Anthony added 20.

SVCC will open VCCS play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. road date at Thomas Nelson CC at Bethel HS in Hampton.
