The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team captured a thriller on Saturday afternoon when DeAndre Miles hit a trey at the buzzer in overtime to give the local team a 90-87 victory over Washington Academy. The victory was the third in the last four games for SVCC. The local team trailed by seven in overtime but did not panic as Miles hit a bucket in the paint and Aaron Logan hit one of two from the line to trim the lead to 84-80 with 2:07 remaining.
After getting a defensive stop, TJ House buried a runner and Miles hit two free-throws after being fouled following a steal to knot the score at 84. House hit a bucket at the 1:03 mark to give SVCC an 86-84 lead and Logan hit one of two from the line for an 87-84 lead with 31 seconds to play. After Washington Academy hit a trey with nine seconds left to knot the score, SVCC got the game-winner from Miles.
SVCC took a 42-34 lead to the halftime break and led for much of the second half until WA made a big run to take a four-point lead with two minutes left in regulation. Miles scored on a rebound and putback and Rick Sullivan hit two free-throws to knot the score as the game went to overtime tied at 75. Miles led SVCC with 26 points in the game while Logan scored 23 and Sullivan added 13. SVCC will travel to Thomas Nelson CC in Hampton on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. tilt.
