Alumni Spotlight - Josh Starner

Josh Starner earned an Agribusiness Career Studies Certificate from SVCC. While taking online classes he accepted a management position with Home Depot in West Virginia. He departed that career to become a full-time student, transferring from SVCC to Virginia Tech, completing a bachelor's degree in Applied Economic Management. He has since been accepted into the Masters of Geography program at Tech.

SVCC Chorus Begins Rehersals

The Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) Chorus will begin rehearsals at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th. If you can read a little music and appreciate the joy of singing you are encouraged to come and join the chorus! Directed by Carol Henderson, the chorus is supported by SVCC as a non-credit class and the registration fee is $20.00 which includes all choral music and a full two-hour rehearsal each week. Registration takes place at our first and second rehearsals of each semester.

Open House At CITE Lab on August 8, 2017

The public is invited to an Open House at the new Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) Lab located at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill.  Open House is Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 118 East Danville Street. 

This fall marks the opening of CITE to prepare students for exciting careers in the Information Technology world. The lab offers students realistic learning experiences in a simulated data center environment and prepares them to take CompTia credentials (A+, Server+, Network+,Security+), industry standards.

Alumni Spotlight - Elana White

Elana White had her first taste of the nursing profession through a Southside Virginia Community College dual enrollment Nurse Aide class she took at Bluestone HighSchool. When she graduated high school in 2014, she had also earned a Career Studies Certificate in Nurse Aide and an Associate of Arts and Sciences in General Studies from SVCC.

Governor Recognizes Local Man

Governor Terry McAuliffe announced recently that, through the New Economy Workforce Credentials Grant program, Virginia’s Community Colleges provided workforce training that enabled 2,173 Virginians to secure industry-recognized credentials, licenses, and certifications needed for high-demand careers, in the first year of the grant program.

Local Athlete Participates in Senior Olympic Games

Dr. Dixie Watts Dalton, Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business at Southside Virginia Community College, recently participated in the 30th anniversary of the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama. The Olympics-style event saw over 10,000 athletes age 50 and over participate in 19 different sports. Competition was held in five-year age divisions within those sports, with Dalton participating in the women’s 50+ division of softball. Her Pennsylvania-based team, Team Works, played six games in a three-day span, as they competed for the gold medal.

Work Ethic Leads to Cool Job

James Branch’s cool job is so cool, he has no plans to quit working until he cannot work anymore. His cool job is as a mechanic maintaining fire and rescue vehicles for the city of Hopewell, Virginia. His work ethic and determination have served him well since he dropped out of high school at 16.

Southside Virginia Community College is entering its 47th year in operation.  Over the years, many students have excelled, completed degrees, received work skills, transferred to four year schools and been successful because of their experience at SVCC.  The tradition continues with 2017 fall classes beginning August 21.

Now is the perfect time to register for classes at SVCC, complete information for financial aid, talk with a counselor and prepare for your college career!! 

New IT Training Lab

Through a partnership with Daniel Andre of ATOS, Southside Virginia Community College worked to create a training lab in South Hill to replicate the work environment of large data centers such as Microsoft and Hewlett Packard. Andre provided expertise in designing the layout and choosing technology for Southside's new CITE (Center for Information Technology Excellence).
