The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team shook off a tough loss the night before to knock off Wake Tech CC, the defending NJCAA Region X champions, 94-74 in the Catawba Valley CC Holiday tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the fourth in the last five games for SVCC and improved the local team to 5-5 on the season.
“It was a great win for our club to finish off the first semester,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith. “To have opened the season with nine games on the road including three against nationally ranked teams and to have won five of them should give our team a big boost heading into the second half of the season.”
SVCC fell behind 16-7 early but Anthony Harris came off the bench and knocked down a trey and Reggie Dennis added a steal and bucket to knot the score at 16 at the 11:41 mark of the first half.
Buckets by Rashaun Alexander and Harris gave SVCC a 37-32 lead late in the first half but Wake Tech closed on an 8-2 run to take a 40-39 halftime lead.
SVCC took the lead for good at the 12:22 mark of the second half on a trey by Tevin Holloway and then went on a 19-2 run to take a 77-57 lead on a bucket by Marcus Hoosier at the 5:15 mark.
Dennis converted two straight steals for buckets during the run while Trevor Williams added six points.
Two treys by Williams over a one-minute span gave SVCC an 89-67 lead on the way to the lopsided win.
Hoosier led SVCC with 20 points in the game while Williams scored 18 with 16 coming in the second half.
Harris knocked down three treys and scored 16 in the game while Holloway added 10.
SVCC will return to the court after the holiday break on January 10 when the play host to the University of Virginia-Lynchburg.
