SVCC Falls 68-66 in Consolation Finals

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team has found much success in the USA National Postgrad Championships over the past few years, winning national titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but the local team ran into some extremely tough competition last week dropping three games including a 68-66 loss against Bryant & Stratton MIT in a consolation final on Saturday in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

“Our young men battled hard against some great competition but we just never completely found our rhythm at the nationals,” said SVCC Coach Dennis Smith. “I am proud of our young men though and the improvement they showed throughout the season.”

SVCC finished the campaign with a 13-10 record.

The local team got off to a quick start against Bryant & Stratton on Saturday jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a steal and dunk by Kamron Hughes at the 14:14 mark of the first half. The local team quickly fell into a big hole however before Kendall Edwards hit a layup to cut the deficit to 34-21 at the 4:07 mark of the first half. KJ Reagans hit a jumper and Michael Jackson added a floater late in the first half as SVCC cut the Bearcats’ lead to 35-29 at the halftime break.

SVCC had to play catch up in the second half and that is what they did as two treys by Amp Harris and a 3-point play by Jackson knotted the score at 66 with 56 seconds to play. The local team got a rebound with 38 seconds left but turned the ball over and Bryant & Stratton hit two free-throws with 22 seconds left to take a 2-point lead. SVCC had the ball and got a shot in the final 5 seconds but it did not fall. Harris led SVCC with 24 points in the game while Jackson scored 20.
