Sherry V. Melvin grew up in South Boston, Virginia and graduated from Halifax County High School. She chose to attend Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) because of its beautiful campus, small class sizes, and the quality of its nursing program. She earned an associate degree in general studies from SVCC, as well as beginning the College's nursing program. She transferred to J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, where she completed her nursing degree.

Since graduating with her associate degrees, Sherry earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Old Dominion University. She currently is employed by Precision Surgical of Northwest Arkansas where she works as a Registered Nurse in operating rooms.

When asked to reflect on her experience at SVCC, Sherry said, “The years at SVCC were the most memorable. I met good friends with whom I am still close. The instructors at SVCC were the best and were always willing to help you understand the material. I have made a successful, rewarding, and fulfilling career as a nurse. I have been a nurse for 29 years and been in operating rooms for 24 years... Nursing has been a great career, and I owe my success in nursing to SVCC.”
