The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team ended the regular season in style with a 92-74 win over Germanna CC on Saturday afternoon SVCC will open national tournament play on Thursday afternoon with a 3:40 p.m. contest against DME, Florida in Myrtle Beach, SC. The local team got off to a slow start against the Grizzlies, but opened up an 11-7 lead at the 13:30 mark of the first half on a trey by Rick Sullivan. Buckets by TJ House and Tyandre Harris gave SVCC a 15-9 lead at the 12:18 mark. A 3-point play by DeAndre Miles at the 6:07 mark gave SVCC a 28-21 lead.
The Grizzlies made a run late in the first half but Tae Holmes hit a bucket in the final seconds to tie the game at 38 at the halftime break. The Panthers got going early in the second half as Miles and Holmes scored on consecutive trips down court to open up a 47-42 lead at the 16:10 mark. Three straight treys by Sullivan, House and Harris gave SVCC a 56-50 lead at the 13:11 mark. Two straight buckets by Marquise Petty gave SVCC a 75-67 at the 5:18 mark and a big dunk by Miles put the wraps on the victory with two minutes to go.
Miles led SVCC with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Sullivan scored 18 points and House added 12. Petty finished with 12 points and grabbed 22 rebounds in the victory. Mason Murray led GCC with 45 points.
