“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
Changing lives in Southside Virginia is my mission as I begin my term as president of this great community college.
Offering education to everyone who can benefit from our courses or programs is the mission of Southside Virginia Community College. Our dedicated staff, faculty and administrators continually strive to offer the most current curriculum and services, cutting edge technology and opportunities for future success to our students.
We plan to move forward with a passion but also with a purpose to serve and deliver the best educational experience possible. SVCC is a comprehensive community college providing quality education to the people of Southside Virginia for more than four decades through a wide range of post-secondary programs which includes transfer, technical, vocational and community service programs. The college’s service area, the largest geographical area within the Virginia Community College System, includes the counties of Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward and the city of Emporia.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth for the leadership it has provided in the development of innovative programs, the college takes pride in its community-based education approach to meeting the needs of service area constituents. This can best be demonstrated by the college’s unique and highly successful Honors Program; its many off-campus centers; its leadership in workforce development; its Dual Enrollment Program ; its Truck Driving and Diesel Tech Training Programs; its involvement in the Southside Governor’s School; and its leadership in the development of the Virginia Master Teachers’ Seminar. The Campus Without Walls in Emporia, replaced by the Southside Virginia Education Center in Greensville County, pioneered the concept of outreach centers that has led to the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, the Estes Center in Chase City, the Occupational/Technical Center at Pickett Park, and The Cumberland Center.
Southside Virginia Community College is a dynamic, 21st Century institution, always developing and changing to meet the new and challenging needs of a complex society. Our future is interwoven with the development of our community; as our service area communities grow, so will we. Through engagement with the community, the college will play an even greater role in the development of the business and intellectual community of Southside Virginia. We are truly a college of and by the community.
The college is proud of the quality instruction it can provide to a very diverse constituency in both traditional classroom environments and through distance education options. Southside Virginia Community College offers numerous classes through an extensive two-way interactive audio and video network and online classes. The college has a teaching staff of highly professional educators who have as their major focus the success of our students within a holistic environment. They develop the social, intellectual, emotional, and physical qualities of our students and give them the coping mechanisms for success in a chosen profession and in life. Small classes and a friendly atmosphere provides a setting that will help students realize their full human potential. The people of Southside deserve and expect a quality education and SVCC is here to provide this for all students.
