While Randolph-Henry High School student from Wylliesburg, Virginia, Megan Devin attended the Governor’s School of Southside Virginia at Southside Virginia Community College. After earning her Associate of Arts and Sciences degree from SVCC the same year she graduated high school, Megan transferred to Longwood University.
Originally majoring in elementary and middle school education with a concentration in math, had multiple experiences that led her to develop a passion for ESL (English as a Second Language). She says, “Because of all the credits I came in with from SVCC, I was able to switch my major to better meet my needs, study Spanish more in-depth, and still graduate within 4 years. Had I not gone to SVCC, I would have graduated with a degree in something that I am not passionate about or been in college for longer than 4 years. I am so happy that I attended SVCC because it allowed for flexibility while I was at Longwood.”
Megan is currently a first grade teacher at a bilingual school in Honduras. She is employed by BECA (Bilingual Education for Central America) which is a U.S. based nonprofit organization committed to providing quality, affordable bilingual education to the educationally disenfranchised while fostering meaningful cultural exchange.
In the future, Megan would like to continue her education by obtaining a Ph.D. She also plans on continuing to provide quality education that will meet the needs of her diverse learners.
Looking back on her time at SVCC, Megan says, “Reflecting on my experiences now, I remember that taking college classes at SVCC while I was in high school was definitely challenging. I struggled at first because I was having to really study for the first time in my life. I had to learn what type of learner I was, what study setting was most effective for me, etc. Because of all of this, I was very prepared when I started at Longwood. I also feel like I am now better equipped to help my students learn how to study because I had to as well.”
