Research Guides

Research Guides are helpful online tools that show you how to find reliable information on a topic.

  • Library Instructional Resources

SVCC's Library offers a variety of online instructional tutorials.  These can also be found in the Blackboard environment on the library tab.

  • Circulation & Reference Desk

Stop by the Circulation/Reference Desk to check out materials, return materials, or ask a question. There is always someone available to help you, so please ask us! We can also renew items, assist you with Interlibrary Loan requests, show you how to use the card catalog, or assist you in finding articles in our online resources.

If you can't make it to the library, you can always use LRC Live, an online reference service for Virginia's community college students. LRC Live is available to you when the library is closed or if you can't make it to campus. If you know your blackboard login and password, you can go to the SVCC online card catalog and sign in. Once you have logged on, you can access your account, see what you have checked out and renew it online. You can also find a book or audiovisual item and place a hold on it. The book or audiovisual item will be sent to the campus you designate (Christanna campus in Alberta or Daniel campus in Keysville) and the library staff will call you when the item is available.

  • Collections

    Circulating Collection

Contains books selected to assist you with classes offered at SVCC. You can browse our open stacks or use the card catalog to search for materials.

    Reference Collection

These books can be checked out overnight. Reference books include handbooks, statistics, biographical sketches, dictionaries, and subject-specific materials. Some of the reference collection is available online so that you can use it when you need it.

    Periodicals and Newspapers

The most current issues are located on the floor of the Library. Please ask for back issues at the Circulation/Reference Desk. Remember, you can also find articles online by searching one of our many online databases. Most of our databases contain both abstracts as well as full-text articles.

    Audiovisual Collection

DVDs, CDs, VHS, audiocassette, kits! We have a small collection of movies for entertainment as well as a larger collection of audiovisual materials on a variety of topics. If you have to give a class presentation, don't forget to look for a video clip or a piece of music to use in your presentation. Just remember to cite your source!

    Bestsellers

Popular fiction reading for your recreational enjoyment.

    Tutorials

The library offers a variety of tutorials from basic research (in Murals), how to use specific databases, and how to create citations (EasyBib). You may be surprised at what you find.
