Director of Secondary Education Credits SVCC for Shaping Her Path
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is proud to feature Dr. Magie Wilkerson in its Alumni Spotlight: Educators Series in celebration of American Education Week. The series highlights former students who began their educational journey at SVCC and are now making an impact across Virginia’s schools.
Dr. Wilkerson’s connection to SVCC began while she was a student at Bluestone High School, attending The Governor’s School of Southside Virginia on the John H. Daniel Campus in Keysville. She says the experience challenged her to think critically, collaborate with peers, and build the confidence needed for college-level work.
“Attending GSSV/SVCC taught me to manage rigorous expectations and take ownership of my learning,” she said. “Balancing high school and college courses strengthened my time management and self-discipline skills I rely on every day.”
A memorable lesson from Dr. Wilkerson’s physics instructor, Dr. Sanzone, reshaped her approach to learning: “Physics isn’t about getting the right number; it’s about understanding why the number makes sense.” She credits moments like these for inspiring her curiosity and long-term commitment to education.
The strong foundation she built at SVCC prepared her for success as she continued her studies, ultimately earning her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Virginia Tech. Today, she serves as the Director of Secondary Education for Campbell County Public Schools.
Dr. Wilkerson strongly encourages students to consider SVCC: “YES! SVCC is a place to discover your strengths, explore your interests, and prepare for your future.” Her advice to students is simple: “Take advantage of every opportunity. Ask questions. Push yourself. And don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.”
To future educators, she offers this encouragement: “Lead with purpose and keep learning. Your example has the power to inspire others to dream bigger and do better.”
SVCC is proud to celebrate Dr. Wilkerson’s accomplishments and to share her story as a testament to the lasting impact of early college experiences.
