Adult Learner Spotlight: Gigi Bliss Finds New Purpose and Opportunity at SVCC
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is proud to highlight Gigi Bliss of Drakes Branch, an adult learner whose journey to higher education reflects courage, faith, and a lifelong passion for learning.
Originally from Oregon, Gigi is a science major pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian, a goal inspired years ago while watching Little House on the Prairie. After spending more than 20 years as a stay-at-home parent, raising her children and later helping care for her grandchildren, Gigi decided it was finally time to focus on her own aspirations.
“Now it’s my turn,” she shared.
Gigi’s path to SVCC has been shaped by perseverance. She spent more than 15 years using a wheelchair and recently underwent a knee replacement. Despite these challenges, she credits faith and determination for guiding her forward.
“I truly believe God told me this is the direction I needed to go,” she said. “Once I listened, the doors opened.”
Gigi chose SVCC after hearing positive feedback about the college’s supportive environment, accessible resources, and flexibility for adult learners. Although she initially worried about returning to school after decades being away, she quickly discovered a welcoming campus culture.
“At SVCC, I’m not seen as an older student. I’m just seen as a student,” she said. “It’s a level playing field.”
Now in her first semester, Gigi is a straight-A student and actively engaged on campus. Tuesdays have become the highlight of her week welcoming students as they enter the Student Services Center. She participates in the Student Government Association, attends leadership conferences, and is a member of the Crafting Club and Choir. She also works as a work-study student, which allows her to remain on campus between classes.
SVCC’s academic support services have played a key role in her success. Gigi receives two hours of math tutoring each week, a resource she says has been invaluable after being out of school for nearly 40 years. She credits her instructors for their patience, encouragement, and willingness to help students succeed.
“I thought it would be much harder as an adult learner,” she said. “But the teachers truly care. They understand your situation and want you to succeed.”
Beyond academics, Gigi and her family maintain a small ranch, raising vegetables and caring for dairy goats, pigs, chickens, and even Boerboel dogs. Gigi has long supported her family’s pursuits and now with their encouragement, she is pursuing her own.
She plans to complete her pre-veterinary coursework at SVCC over the next three years before continuing her education abroad to complete veterinary school.
Gigi encourages other adult learners to take advantage of the opportunities available at SVCC.
“Jump in with both feet,” she said. “Use the resources—FAFSA, tutoring, work-study. Age doesn’t matter. You only have one life, and you should live it fully.”
Her journey stands as a powerful reminder that it is never too late to learn, grow, and follow your calling.
