Graduate Credits SVCC for Launching Her Career in Education
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) proudly highlights another inspiring story in its Alumni Spotlight: Educators Series in celebration of American Education Week. This week, SVCC is honoring former students whose educational journeys began on our campuses and who now make a meaningful impact in classrooms across the region.
This spotlight features Ella Patton, a SVCC alumna whose passion for learning and for helping others learn was shaped during her time in The Governor’s School of Southside Virginia program. Today, she is a dedicated 7th grade English Language Arts teacher at Journey Middle School in Charlottesville, using the foundation she built at SVCC to support and inspire her students every day.
Her path toward the humanities felt natural. “I’ve always loved reading and creative writing,” she shared. “Although STEM was interesting, it was an easy choice for me to choose the Humanities program.”
Academically, she described her Governor’s School experience as both rigorous and transformative. She was challenged to grow, sharpen her skills, and push her limits. Personally, she found lasting friendships and discovered confidence in leadership roles, strengths she now brings into her classroom.
One of her biggest influences at SVCC was faculty member Wendy Kidd. “Wendy Kidd was and continues to be my biggest inspiration,” Ella said. “She encouraged me to go above and beyond. She took the time to offer thoughtful feedback and truly cared about my growth. I always felt seen and supported in her class.”
The transition from SVCC to university life was seamless. Equipped with strong study habits and advanced coursework experience, she entered her program at James Madison University prepared for success. She graduated with a degree in Secondary English Education in December 2023, later gaining experience through an after-school literacy program before stepping into the classroom as a 9th grade English teacher. This school year, she teaches 7th grade language arts.
Ella credits SVCC for helping her become the educator she is today. “SVCC helped me become an independent, motivated, and ambitious professional,” she said. “Because I had so many meaningful opportunities here, I’m far more confident in my field than I would have been otherwise.”
Reflecting on her journey, she says the diligence and resilience she cultivated at SVCC continue to shape her success in the classroom. “Governor’s School taught me how to build on my successes and reflect after my failures. Those habits help me manage the challenges of middle school education.”
When asked if she would recommend SVCC to others, Ella’s response was immediate: “Absolutely! SVCC has programs for everyone and a faculty body that is beyond knowledgeable and supportive.” She also offers heartfelt advice for current SVCC students: “Take advantage of the professors’ wisdom and experience. Stay after class, go to office hours, ask questions, and reach out for help. You are never alone here and you’re missing out if you try to do it all by yourself.”
And for future educators, Ella’s message is clear: “The kids matter, but they can’t learn their best if you’re not at your best. Take breaks, take care of yourself, and don’t take everything home. A rested, healthy teacher is far more effective than a stressed one. Care for yourself so you can care for your students.”
SVCC is proud to celebrate Ella’s success and the success of alumni across the region who continue to strengthen communities through education. Her story reflects the mission of Southside Virginia Community College: to empower students with skills, confidence, and support that last far beyond the classroom.
