Graduate Reflects on How SVCC Prepared Him for a Successful Career in Education
As part of Southside Virginia Community College’s ongoing Alumni Spotlight Series celebrating American Education Week, we are honored to highlight a SVCC graduate whose educational journey showcases the strength of community college pathways and the impact they have on the region’s teaching workforce.
SVCC Alumnus Antonio Patterson connected with the college through dual enrollment courses at Park View High School and later through the Governor’s School program, where he earned his associate degree. Today, he serves as a 5th grade English Language Arts teacher at Chase City Elementary School giving back to the same community that shaped his early educational experiences.
He shared that SVCC’s strong transfer programs played a major role in his decision to enroll. “I took advantage of SVCC’s transfer program knowing I could get into Mary Baldwin University afterward,” he said. “I mapped out every prerequisite I could complete at SVCC first.”
Academically, Antonio recalls a positive and engaging experience. Professors made courses enjoyable and meaningful, and he appreciated the range of classes available. But, it was the personal support that stood out the most.
“The guidance staff were incredibly helpful with anything you could think of,” he said. “Across campus deans, professors, even the staff in the bookstore—I never had a single negative experience. Everyone wanted students to succeed.”
He credits Professor John Hays, then a Psychology instructor, as a significant influence. “He constantly reminded me that I had the potential to accomplish great things. He had a way of knowing when to push and when to listen,” he said. “A lot of the way I listen to my students today comes from his example.”
After earning his associate degree, he continued completing prerequisites at SVCC before transferring to Mary Baldwin University through a guaranteed admission agreement. Even after transferring, he returned to take consortium classes through SVCC, an option that allowed him to stay connected and continue progressing efficiently.
“The foundation I built at SVCC was the biggest stepping stone,” he said. “Being surrounded by great educators showed me what teaching with purpose and passion really looks like.”
Now in his fifth year teaching 5th grade, Antonio says the role has been incredibly rewarding. “It’s an honor to be a positive role model for the kids in this community,” he said. “I love what I do.”
He encourages current and prospective SVCC students to embrace everything the college offers. “Take advantage of every opportunity—programs, scholarships, guidance. Everyone at SVCC wants to see you succeed,” Antonio said.
He also strongly recommends SVCC to anyone starting their college journey. “I would absolutely recommend SVCC to others. The idea that community college isn’t as good as a four-year school is outdated. SVCC has some of the best educators and programs you’ll find. And whether you’re transferring or training for a career, they make the next step achievable.”
To future educators, he offers this encouragement: “Stick with it. Teaching isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. The impact you make on your students’ lives and futures will stay with them and with you. Great teachers are remembered. Be that difference.”
SVCC is proud to celebrate Antonio and share his story as a testament to the lasting impact of early college experiences.
