Local Kindergarten Teacher Reflects on How Southside Virginia Community College Shaped Her Path in Education

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is proud to celebrate American Education Week by highlighting the inspiring journey of one of its distinguished alumni, a Mecklenburg County educator who credits her success to the strong academic foundation and personal support she received at SVCC.

Nicole Glynn, now a Kindergarten teacher at South Hill Elementary School, began her educational journey with a clear goal in mind: to become a teacher and make a meaningful impact on young learners. Wanting to remain close to home while working, she chose SVCC as the place to begin her college experience and she says it is a decision she would make again without hesitation.

“I knew I wanted to be a teacher, so I entered the education program at SVCC,” she shared. “Being close to home allowed me to work, but it also gave me the chance to grow academically and personally.”

During her time at SVCC, she found strong support from faculty who went above and beyond to help her succeed. She recalls the lasting impact of professors Mrs. Sharon Freeman and the late Mr. Brent Richey, both of whom played pivotal roles in her college experience.

Nicole recalls “I struggled in math and Mr. Richey always stayed after class to help me understand the material. Mrs. Freeman pushed my writing skills, and even now when I see her, she still remembers me. That goes a long way.”

She describes her academic experience at SVCC as “amazing,” citing small class sizes and professors who were consistently willing to help. Personally, she enjoyed reconnecting with former high school classmates and meeting new peers, building relationships that strengthened her college experience.

One of the biggest lessons she carries with her today is simple but powerful: “Always ask the questions; there’s never a silly one.” She now encourages her own students with that same confidence and openness.

After completing her studies at SVCC, she transferred to Mary Baldwin University (MBU), prepared and confident thanks to the foundation she built. Today, living her dream as a Kindergarten teacher, she cherishes the relationships she builds with children both inside and outside the classroom.

“It has been a dream. I can’t see myself anywhere else,” she said. “I love seeing my students at sports events and having them run up to me with big smiles. Those relationships mean everything.”

When reflecting on her journey, she credits SVCC for shaping the educator she has become.

“SVCC helped me become a better educator by teaching me to support my students and always strive for their best. The professors modeled exactly the kind of teacher I wanted to be, someone students feel comfortable coming to with anything.” cherishes Nicole.

As the college celebrates American Education Week, Nicole shares heartfelt advice for future and current students: “Build relationships with your professors and always ask questions. They want you to be amazing!” When asked whether she would recommend SVCC to others, her enthusiasm is unmistakable:  “Yes! SVCC classrooms are small, which makes learning easier. The professors are amazing and make sure you are striving!”

SVCC is honored to spotlight alumni like Nicole, whose passion for education continues to strengthen local schools and inspire future generations. Her story represents the heart of SVCC’s mission—empowering students to reach their goals, serve their communities, and pursue meaningful careers.
