SVCC Alumna Spotlight: Nursing Graduate Builds Compassionate Career Through Community College Pathway

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is proud to spotlight Ashley Greene, a nursing alumna whose dedication to patient care and lifelong learning reflects the strength of SVCC’s academic programs and supportive learning environment.

Ashley began her college journey at SVCC in 2006, choosing to stay close to home while pursuing higher education. With a lifelong passion for caring for others, she started her healthcare career early as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) while still in high school. This experience confirmed her desire to become a nurse and set her on a path of continued advancement in the nursing profession.

After earning her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) credential in 2009, she returned to SVCC to further her education through the LPN-to-RN Bridge Program once it became available. She selected SVCC with confidence, knowing she would be learning from one of the top nursing programs in the Commonwealth.

Although the program was academically challenging, Ashley thrived, graduating at the top of her class and receiving the prestigious John J. Cavan Graduate Student Award. She credits both the rigor of the program and the strong sense of community among students for her success.

“Academically, the experience was demanding but rewarding,” she said. “Personally, I met some of the best people, classmates who were just as motivated to succeed. We supported one another and many of those friendships remain strong today.”

One faculty member in particular left a lasting impact. Ashely credits Mrs. Moore for encouraging her to continue pursuing her education and for inspiring her growth not only as a nurse, but also as an educator.

Since graduating, she began her career in acute care, but soon discovered her true calling in hospice nursing. Ashley is currently employed as an RN Case Manager with Amedisys Hospice of Blackstone, where she provides compassionate care to patients and families during end-of-life journeys. In addition to her clinical role, she serves as a peer mentor, helping train and support new hospice nurses entering the field.

Ashley attributes her professional success to the strong foundation she built at SVCC.

“The smaller class sizes and supportive environment help you build confidence and real relationships with instructors who know you,” she said. “Community college teaches resilience because most students are balancing school with work, family, and life responsibilities. By the time you enter your career, you’re ready.”

Her advice to current and future SVCC students is simple yet powerful: use the opportunities available.

“Community college is an incredible launchpad,” Ashley said. “Take advantage of tutoring, career services, and student support. Get involved, gain experience early, and remember that everyone’s educational journey looks different.”

She strongly recommends SVCC to others, citing dedicated faculty, strong leadership, and a genuine commitment to student success.

“Don’t let anyone tell you what your educational journey should look like,” she added. “Show up, stay open to new opportunities, ask for help when you need it, and celebrate the small wins along the way.”

Her story stands as a testament to the impact of community college education and the meaningful careers it helps create.
