Commencement speaker, Troy Selberg, a NASCAR professional and Executive Leadership Coach, gave an inspiring speech to SVCC's class of 2023. Mr. Selberg's message was about life choices and left the graduates with these points of wisdom: treat people how you want to be treated; don’t find yourself in a box or a chain link fence; know technology is changing fast, change with it; the menu only tells you what’s in the kitchen; you are always welcome back for continuing education at Southside.
Mr. Selberg's speech also referenced how very successful people grew up in Southside Virginia; such as Rick Hendrick who created one of the largest car dealerships in the country along with a winning NASCAR enterprise. Selberg said that Mr. Hendrick succeeded because of his people skills, which was developed from growing up in Palmer Springs (a small town in Southside, VA). He also referenced other successful people such as Woo Daves, a professional bass fisherman; James Solomon Russell, founder of Saint Paul's College; and Four-Star General Joesph Inge who were all from Southside Virginia. Selberg's inspirational message to the graduates showed that walking across the stage was just the beginning of their success in life.
