Southside Virginia Community College Welcomes Microsoft Military Datacenter Pathway Cohort 25-3

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) proudly welcomed the Microsoft Military Datacenter Pathway Cohort 25-3 to the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center for an immersive and inclusive hands-on training experience in October.

This specialized program offered students the opportunity to engage in simulated ticket runs for both Site Services and Critical Environment departments, emphasizing safety, operational processes, and real-world proficiency. The training marked the fourth cohort hosted through Hiring Our Heroes, a partnership dedicated to helping transitioning military personnel move successfully from service into high-demand technology roles in the datacenter industry.

SVCC hosted 36 transitioning service members from across the country which included the largest Critical Environment student group to date. Over the past year since the program’s inception, the initiative has achieved an 85% job placement rate within Microsoft, a testament to the program’s effectiveness and the dedication of its participants.

Beyond hands-on learning, students had the chance to tour Microsoft datacenters prior to their official operations, as well as other technical facilities such as the John H. Kerr Dam. This cohort also brought the highest number of Microsoft volunteers to date, each offering mentorship and interview preparation to help participants transition into civilian careers.

“At SVCC, we are honored to partner with Microsoft and Hiring Our Heroes to help equip veterans with the technical skills and confidence needed to thrive in today’s workforce,” said Dr. Chad Patton, SVCC Dean of Career and Occupational Technology. “This initiative not only supports our military heroes but also strengthens Virginia’s role in the rapidly growing data center and technology sectors.”

Investing in the training of exiting military personnel is not just an act of gratitude for their service but a strategic step toward harnessing their leadership, discipline, and technical aptitude for economic and technological growth. Wendy Ezell, SVCC’s Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) Coordinator expressed “As a community college, it’s incredibly meaningful to host the Hiring Our Heroes training program and play a direct role in supporting those who’ve served our nation. By providing soldiers with hands-on training and pathways to new careers, we’re not only helping them successfully transition back into the workforce but also empowering them to continue serving their families and strengthening our communities.” Collaborative initiatives between Microsoft and SVCC exemplify how targeted workforce programs can open doors for veterans while addressing critical talent needs in high-demand industries.
