SVCC Cosmetology Program Celebrates Family Success Story

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) recently celebrated its latest group of cosmetology graduates at a ceremony held July 30 at the Estes Center in Chase City. Among the graduates was a remarkable trio, a mother and her two daughters, who completed the program together, proving that education can be both a family bond and a pathway to new opportunities.

When asked why they chose to enroll as a family, Jennifer Rose, the mother explained, “Our family’s decision to embark on this cosmetology journey together was a beautiful blend of passion, creativity, and unity. Ashlyn’s dream of becoming a cosmetologist, which sparked when she was just five, inspired us all. Leah’s revelation during Ashlyn’s birthday salon day—that this field could be the perfect canvas for her artistic talents—sealed the deal. As a mother, my heart is set on paving the way for my children’s success. Much like my husband and I pour our hearts into our tree service business, joining this program together allowed us to support each other, grow as a team, and make unforgettable memories while chasing our dreams.”

For this family, cosmetology was the natural choice. Ashlyn’s passion for the field, paired with Leah’s artistic drive, created the spark, while the encouragement of a local stylist—an SVCC graduate herself—offered reassurance that SVCC was the right place to pursue their goals.

When asked if they would recommend others taking a class with a family member or friend, they were quick to say yes: “Absolutely, we wholeheartedly encourage it! Southside’s exceptional program is made even richer when shared with loved ones. Learning alongside family or friends creates a built-in support system, fostering accountability and turning every lesson into a collaborative adventure.”

The family shared that their favorite part of the program was lab days, where hands-on practice allowed their creativity to come alive. Looking forward, they plan to work in local salons to gain experience before ultimately pursuing their dream of opening a family-run salon.

They began their studies in fall 2024 and crossed the graduation stage together in July 2025. Reflecting on their journey, they added: “This has been a testament to the power of family, creativity, and shared goals. We’re not just learning a trade—we’re building a legacy together.”

SVCC’s cosmetology program prepares students with practical, hands-on training in hair, nails, skincare, and salon management, equipping them with the skills needed to become licensed professionals.
