Two SVCC Employees Receive Workforce Awards at Hire Ed Conference

Two SVCC employees were recently honored for their outstanding contributions to workforce development and student success at the Virginia Community College System’s (VCCS) Hire Education Conference held at the Hotel Roanoke.

One of the highlights of the Hire Education Conference is the 2025 Chancellor’s Awards for Workforce Development, which recognize individuals and groups who have gone above and beyond in support of students and workforce programs across the Commonwealth.

Dr. Keith Harkins, Vice President of Academic & Workforce Programs at SVCC, received the Expanding Opportunities Award. He was recognized for his extraordinary, statewide impact on workforce education. His visionary leadership has strengthened the connection between education and economic development across Virginia through innovative programs such as the Power Line Worker Program, Power2Degree, Credit for Prior Learning initiatives, military training partnerships with Microsoft, and expanded workforce training within correctional facilities. Under his leadership, SVCC has become a model for responsive, industry-driven workforce solutions that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and support critical infrastructure throughout the Commonwealth.

Maki Malone, SVCC Workforce Credentials & Apprenticeship Advisor, received the Outstanding Achievement by a College Faculty or Staff Member Award. She was honored for her exceptional dedication to student support and workforce partnerships. As the primary point of contact for the Power2Degree program and serving as SVCC’s Apprenticeship Coach, she guides power industry professionals, apprentices, and military veterans from initial inquiry through graduation. Her personalized approach, expertise in Credit for Prior Learning, and strong relationships with industry partners including Dominion Energy, Virginia Power Cooperatives, and Microsoft have expanded enrollment, improved retention, and led to notable student successes, including SVCC’s first Power2Degree student named to the All-Virginia Academic Team.

Together, these honorees exemplify SVCC’s mission to align education and workforce development in ways that change lives and strengthen Virginia’s future. SVCC is dedicated to inspiring excellence and transforming lives while contributing to the economic vitality of the diverse communities it serves.
