SVCC Nursing Alumna from 2005 Reflects on Journey from Student to Healthcare Leader
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is proud to highlight the incredible career of a 2005 Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) alumna who exemplifies the power of education, determination, and community impact.
A native of Greensville County, Peggy Dunn was part of the first full-time graduating class to complete the ADN program entirely at SVCC. Previously, first year students would attend classes at SVCC and then transfer to Reynolds Community College to complete an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing. The launch of SVCC’s full-time program gave students like Dunn the opportunity to pursue their dreams locally—while balancing full-time work.
Shortly after earning her degree, she quickly rose through the ranks in her healthcare career. Within six months, Dunn became a Clinical Coordinator at the former Greensville Memorial Hospital, and just a few months later, she was promoted to Operating Room (OR) Manager—a leadership track she continues on today serving as Bon Secours Southern Virginia Medical Center’s Manager of Surgical Services and House Supervisors. Dunn was selected "Manager of the Year" 2011, 2013, and 2014. She was also selected "Southern Virginia Called to Shine Champion" in 2022 and was recognized for having one of the highest associate engagement scores for Bon Secours.
Reflecting on her time at SVCC, Dunn shared, "SVCC laid the foundation for my success. The program’s rigorous curriculum prepared me not only for patient care but also for advancing my education and stepping into leadership roles." She credits SVCC’s strong academic standards and supportive environment with preparing her to earn her Bachelor’s in Nursing and eventually a Master’s in Nursing Administration.
SVCC’s ADN program not only equipped her with critical clinical skills but also helped her see the bigger picture as a leader in healthcare. "The program set the groundwork and encouraged me to keep learning, growing, and giving back," Dunn shared. Today, in addition to her leadership role in healthcare, she remains actively involved in her community. She participates in career fairs, promoting nursing careers and inspiring future generations to follow in her footsteps.
Southside Virginia Community College’s Nursing Program continues to offer the same high-quality education and support that helped launch Dunn’s career.
