SVCC Poetry and Arts Contest

Calling all SVCC Poets and Artists!

SVCC invites our students to enter the 2025-2026 SVCC Poetry and Art Contest. This year’s theme is “I Dream”.

Eligibility:

Both the Poetry and Art Contests are open to all SVCC students who are enrolled at least part-time in adult education, dual enrollment/early college, workforce credential, certificate, or degree programs in Summer 2025, Fall 2025, and/or Spring 2026.
 

The Process:

  • SVCC students will submit their work through the interest applications by Sunday, February 1st.
  • Local poets and artists will serve as judges. They will select first, second, and third place winners from the poet laureate category and first, second, and third place winners from the visual art luminary category.
  • The First Place winners in both categories will advance to the VCCS Visual Arts and Poetry Laureate competition on March 27th and 28th at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, VA.
  • A new panel of judges at the state competition will select a Poet Laureate and Visual Art Luminary of Virginia's Community Colleges.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Accepted works should be created in 2025 – early 2026.
  • Visual Arts: Drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics are eligible. We cannot accept works of video, film, performance art, jewelry, craft or any artworks created using artificial intelligence (AI-generated art is not eligible).
  • Poetry: Poems and prose poems are eligible. Works created with the assistance of artificial intelligence are not eligible.
