SVCC Recognizes Adult Learners at GED Commencement Celebration

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) recently celebrated the achievements of 31 GED graduates during a special commencement ceremony recognizing perseverance, dedication, and new beginnings on October 23. Ten graduates attended the ceremony in person, joined by proud family members, friends, faculty, and community supporters.

Dr. Quentin R. Johnson, President of SVCC, welcomed the graduates and their guests, offering heartfelt congratulations on their accomplishment and encouragement for their future endeavors.

The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Jennifer Bass, an inspiring example of the power of lifelong learning. A former GED graduate from SVCC’s Adult Education Program, Bass went on to earn both her Associate and Bachelor’s degrees. Today, she teaches in the very same program where her educational journey began, a true full-circle moment.

In her message to the graduates, Bass shared, “I am here not just as a graduate, but as a supporter and mentor. I see you; I was you; and want you to know this is just the beginning. Never give up.”

The ceremony served as a reminder that education is a pathway to opportunity and transformation and that the support systems at SVCC extend far beyond the classroom.

SVCC’s Adult Education Program continues to empower individuals to achieve their academic and career goals through personalized instruction, mentorship, and community partnerships.
